Diplomats Shut Down Cougars Rally Attempt

DANVILLE, Va. – Fueled by the strength of its hitting, the Franklin & Marshall baseball team downed Averett 16-13 on Friday afternoon. The Diplomats improved to 5-3-1 on the season, and the Cougars dropped to 16-9.

The Diplomats got on the board immediately with four runs in the first inning. The Diplomats added two more runs in the second and one in the third. Up by seven heading into the fourth, the Diplomats recorded an impressive eight runs. Blue Wells tripled to right center field to plate Eric Bornstein, Russell Tischler, and Bill Murray. After six walks and two wild pitches, F&M took a 15-0 lead.

Following four scoreless innings, the Cougars finally answered with a six-run fifth to get on the board. Eric Sibrizzi singled to left center field to plate Adam Higgins and Jimbo Newcomb. Jordan Kidd followed suit, slamming a triple to right center field and sending home Michael Moore and Sibrizzi.

At the top of the seventh frame the Diplomats picked up their final run. Connof Delvin got on base with a single to left center field and advanced to third after Alex Vescera singled down the right field line. Andrew Conlan flied out to left field and Delvin ran home.

Averett came out with a last ditch effort and recorded seven runs in the bottom of the ninth. Jake Loye doubled to left field and collected 3 RBIs, sending home Sibrizzi, Adam Higgins, and James Carter. The Cougar’s late offensive effort was not enough, however, as the Diplomats came away with the victory.

Triantos and Matt Will each totaled three runs for F&M, while Anderson, Rolnick, and Bornstein each added two. Wells picked up a game-high four RBIs.

Evan Lang picked up his first win of the season, allowing five hits and striking out three.

Muench took the loss and dropped to 0-2 on the year. He allowed four runs and walked four.

F&M continues action tomorrow with a double header at Shenandoah. The first game is slated for 1 p.m., followed by the second game at 3 p.m.
