ASHLAND, Va. – Eric Herbst fanned six batters in the final three innings and Randolph-Macon could not recover, as the Diplomats garnered a 6-5 win over the Yellow Jackets Tuesday evening in non-conference baseball action. F&M won its fourth straight game and improved to 4-2 on the year while the Yellow Jackets fell to 5-7.

Up by one run after six innings, Herbst took over for Jason Anderson to seal the Diplomats’ fate. He struck out two batters in both the sixth and seventh innings and one each in the eighth and ninth to stun the Yellow Jackets to pick up his first save of the season.

Randolph-Macon took an immediate lead in the first frame scoring two runs off of three hits. The Yellow Jackets went up 3-0 in the bottom of the third before F&M rallied with a four-run fourth inning.

Russell Tischler singled up the middle to plate Nick Rolnick and get the Diplomats on the board, but it was Eric Bornstein’s two-run triple to left center field that got F&M moving. Drew Atkins’ ground out drove home Bornstein as the Diplomats took the lead.

The Yellow Jackets answered with a one-run fourth inning to tie the game, and the Diplomats countered. F&M notched two more runs in the top of the fifth from Anderson and J.T. Triantos to take a 6-4 lead. The Yellow Jackets added a run in the fifth, but Herbst proved too much for Randolph Macon.

The Diplomats collected 11 hits and the Yellow Jackets tallied 10. Anderson notched the win for F&M and Herbst was credited with the save. Herbst did not allow any runs or hits in the game. Matt Tiller took the loss for the Yellow Jackets, giving up four earned runs on seven hits.

Triantos went 2-for-3 and Anderson and Bill Murray recorded two hits apiece.

F&M continues its 12-game road stretch on March 17 with a 3 p.m. match-up at Lynchburg.
