Westfield State Sweeps F&M

Westfield 9, F&M 6 (9 inn.) | Westfield 11, F&M 5

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Franklin & Marshall's baseball team dropped a pair to Westfield State (Mass.) on Monday. The Diplomats (3-4) fell 9-6 in the first game, which was scheduled for seven, but lasted nine. The Diplomats dropped the evening game, 11-5.

Westfield (4-1) rolled to an early lead, picking up five runs on two hits and two errors in the first. F&M starter, Matt Metsch, surrendered only a single earned run in the frame. He limited Westfield to four hits through six innings. He struck out three, but was not a factor in the decision.

Metsch didn't factor because of Bill Murray and John Dutton. Murray hit a two-run blast in the four-run sixth, while Dutton followed on in the inning with a two-run double off of the leftfield wall to knot it at 5-5. Matt Valente had gotten the Diplomats on the board in the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch. He had reached on an error.

F&M was unable to cash in on its new life. Westfield's Kevin Lyons hit a ninth inning grand slam to make it 9-5. Matt Will countered with a home run in the bottom of the inning to make it the 9-6 final. Chris Miller (0-1) was on the hill when Lyons roared.

Jason Anderson (0-1) was battered in the fourth inning of the second game when Westfield put up eight runs. Cagney Turner hit a two-run homer in the inning to start the assault on the scoreboard.  When that attack finished, the score was 8-2.

Andrew Hanson went 2-for-3 in the closing game with a run and an RBI. Nick Rolnick has two hits and two RBIs. Valente's lone hit of the game was a triple. He scored a run for the Diplomats. F&M returns to action tomorrow with two games against Greeneville (Ill.).
